Clay - David Almond

In 2005 this book was published and I am so glad that it did.

Written by the amazing David Almond, author of Skellig, had written yet another masterpiece with this one.

The characters, Davie and Geordie - two ordinary young boys from the town of Felling who are interrupted by the mysterious nature of Stephen Rose and his clay-making abilities. Davie decided to learn more about the identity of Stephen: Where did he come from?

What does this stranger want with him?

Why is Stephen so obsessed with clay?

All is learnt once the book is read.

Audience - Year 6 onwards (a little bit of risky language).

Ease - chapters broken down into 1 to 3 pages each. Very easy to keep reading.

Personal Response:

This book is well designed for anyone who wants a 'light' book that can be easily picked up and read over time. I really enjoyed the fact that the chapters were much shorter than other books meaning that I could quickly feel as though I had made progress in it. My most memorable moment in this book has to be the creation of Clay - having the very distinct link to Religion and creation of man allows teachers to link this book with religious teachings. Teachers could develop and ask children how each character would've felt in that chapter (Stephen, Davie and Clay).

Overall, I highly recommend this book as it is beautifully written with a gripping story that will stay with you forever.
